Singapore Part 3 – More food
It’s a real pity this first photo had to be taken in the dark with my phone. What you can’t see very well is the dozens of tables, chairs and people to populate them ALL over the footpath. The footpaths were congested enough during the day time, but at night they took on a life of their own in Geylang. So congested, in fact, that we had to walk on the road in the path of oncoming traffic because there was literally no room on the footpath. The restaurants and cafes must figure that the fines are cheaper than the money they take in this way!
The next photo is of a noodle bar across the street. Interesting name…
We discovered (only on our last day, mind you) that Singapore has a restaurant rating system. We were just trying to eat at places where there were lots of people, figuring the rule of thumb that if the locals eat it, it must be ok. But apparently that’s not necessarily the case. Perhaps they just have acclimatised guts? What you need to look for is a square of paper on the wall with either an A, B, or C. A is supposed to be the top rating for establishments that exceed minimum requirements of safe food handling and hygiene. B is only just satisfactory and C … well, less than satisfactory. Interestingly, it was only after I found this out that I saw ANY plaque on the wall. After scouring the walls of dozens of food places in Geylang we discovered a few Bs, not one A and definitely not a C. It appears it would be better not to display the plaque at all than to advertise one’s less than ideal micro-organism count. There is also a fine for not displaying the plaque. But, once again, it seems the rules are worth breaking for the takings.
